Full course description

Teacher:   Elyse Hales

Interpersonal Skills – Communicating with Residents is a practical, scenario-based class designed specifically for Public Works employees who interact with the public while maintaining roads, utilities, and other essential infrastructure. Participants will learn how to confidently and professionally respond to resident questions—whether on the jobsite or over the phone. The class covers the fundamentals of clear communication, active listening, and explaining technical work in everyday language.

Through real-world examples and interactive scenarios, employees will practice situations regarding handling frustrated residents, addressing safety concerns and setting realistic expectations for timelines. Attendees will leave with practical tools for diffusing tension, improving community trust, and representing their agency positively. Participants will be better equipped to represent their department, strengthen public confidence, and create positive experiences for the residents they serve.
